Information For Authors

The Communication Center Journal (CCJ) is a national, peer-reviewed journal that features research and perspectives relevant to communication centers in higher education.

CCJ offers five general sections: Research, Praxis, Digital Perspectives from the Center (DPC), Excellence in the Center (student submissions), and Book Reviews. The journal also features thematic special sections that focus on broad-based topics.

CCJ manuscripts submitted for consideration in these sections are limited to 5,000 words, but shorter submissions are welcome. Manuscripts should follow conventions of APA 6th edition.

Research

Articles published in CCJ’s Research section focus on communication centers and their situatedness in a larger academic environment of colleges, departments, programs, and student-support and faculty development centers as well as their situatedness in the larger community. Articles should be sufficiently informed by theory drawn from communication and cognate disciplines and should reflect an awareness of extant scholarship.

Praxis

CCJ also publishes manuscripts describing “best practices” in all aspects of a communication center’s operation and raising communication center issues in the journal’s Praxis section. Essays should be of general interest and significant, and they should be supported by relevant theory and reflect an awareness of extant contributions to center praxis.

Digital Perspectives from the Center (DPC)

Submissions for CCJ’s innovative DPC section take the form of brief videos focused on center perspectives. DPC entries are peer-reviewed and offer the opportunity to share data, narratives, insights, and other insights that are difficult (or impossible) to communicate in other modes or media. Videos are welcome for consideration in any form. Final videos selected for inclusion in this section must be made available by the center or author(s) via YouTube.

Book Reviews

CCJ invites book reviews and scholarly reviews of 750-1,000 words. We welcome inquiries and suggestions regarding potential books to review or titles of particular interest. Thorough reviews will usually include the following:

  • A brief description of the book’s contents.
  • A scholarly evaluation of the book–including its contribution and relation to existing literature and trends in the field, its strengths and weaknesses, and its unique qualities (if any).
  • A brief description of the appropriate audience for the book.

Excellence in the Center
 
Student staff members (Tutors, Consultants, Coaches) working in communication centers are invited to submit to the Excellence in the Center section of the Communication Center Journal.
 
Manuscript submissions for this section should be 800-1000 words and should build on arguments rooted in literature while offering new approaches, interpretations, or extensions of communication center consulting practices. Manuscripts should conform to the journal’s publication guidelines for formatting and style.

Format of Submissions

All submissions must be the original work of the author/s and should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Information about the manuscript’s provenance (e.g. where previously presented) and acknowledgements will appear on “About the Authors” pages and need not be submitted prior to peer review.
